Looking back on the past 8 weeks or so in Ms. Froehlich's class, I've learned a lot. I'd say the biggest thing I was thought is that a theme is not simply one word or idea, but a series of insights that are all related. This has really helped me improve my writing and dig deeper into the literature or film we're studying. There are still a lot of tough things to deal with in class, though. I really want to work towards making my voice come out more in my writing, and also to make sure my ideas are solidly supported with evidence. Another thing I want to focus on improving is not stressing out about papers and essays. I get so nervous and ask too many questions (Sorry, Ms. Froehlich).
I feel like our classroom environment is fairly mediocre. 5th hour seems to be very talkative and I think we should channel all that energy into trying to focus. That way, not only will our grades improve, but so will Ms. F's feelings towards 5th hour :). Also, I think that during group discussions it would be good to hear from some people who don't usually talk so we can hear the new ideas they have to contribute.
My goals for second quarter are to really focus on improving my writing skills. I want to vary my word choice, and make my ideas come accross in a clear and interesting manner. Another goal I want to work towards is meeting some new people in the class. There are people who I haven't spoken to much yet, but they seem very interesting and fun. Looking ahead at the final part of first semester, I hope that I can acheive my goals and that our class can keep up the hard work.

I loved that you talked about how we learned about theme, i agree that before this class i didnt know that theme could be more than just "survival" or "love". I also agree that in group discussions it would be great to hear from some of the more shy people in our class because i know from listening to their memoirs that they have so much valuable input.
I know this is what Reka said, too, but I also agree that theme was definitely a new thing. I think we may have talked about what a theme was a bit last year, but no one really pounded it into our heads until this year. Also, it's probably true that we could stand to be a bit quieter in class, but at the same time, I think we're a lot more respectful now than at the beginning of the year.
Oh, I totally agree with the whole "learning a theme isn't one word" thing. I mean, I already knew that, but we went much more in depth with that idea this first quarter. Totally off subject, I don't think you need to work on your voice too much, I mean it comes out very nicely in this blog. ; ) Anyway, I agree also that our class needs to channel it's energy a bit more in a productive manner, myself included. All in all, great summery of first quarter. One down, three to go! ; )
i loved how you talked about the theme. i know i struggled with that also! i also loved how you put your voice into this! i felt like i wasn't talking to some robot, but i was acctually talking to Kenzie! i also really like how you talked about how some people in our class are still really shy, i know what you mean.
I toatally agree with what you said about learning about theme. Going into this year I would have probabley said that a theme to the books we read were death or suffering but this class has really taught me to elaborate more and show that the theme is the authors interpertation of the events. Another point that i agree with you on is what you said about channeling our energy into focus. All of us could definatley do a better job of focusing and talking less and I think that would be a good goal to strive for in second quarter. Good post.
I agree with you very much about how Ms. Froehlich taught us about much deeper and more insightful thesis statements. It was hard at first but I can already tell that our thesis statemets are better. I think that our classroom environment has improved a bit though, but yes we could probably be more productive with less talking.
Hey, you can ask as many questions as you want to! Your ability to write a thesis statement will keep imrpoving as the year progresses. Keep up the positive attitude and the willingness to work hard and Q2 will be a success as well!
